Blue Diesels and British Railways Sandwiches

This is the story of my childhood during the late 1950s and 60s, when as a young train spotter I witnessed the gradual modernisation of British Railways. I stopped train spotting in 1968.Following ten years away from the railway I returned and was shocked to see how much of the modern railway that I new as a boy had disappeared. I decided to start train spotting again (1979) and to record as much as possible of the remaining railway before it had all gone.

This book documents a 7 day rail journey I did in April 1981, during which I travelled on 45 different scheduled trains and I completed 2640.75 rail miles.
I logged 752 locomotives and their locations (most are long since gone) and I saw 27 of the 30 classes operating on British Rail at the time.
During April 1981, British Rail was still in its blue period and continued to serve its infamous British Rail sandwiches on its Buffet Cars. This was an important part of the trip as I was on trains for long periods of time. (Graham Teeson)
