In this programme we take a trip from Central Seattle wandering through the northern State of Washington and the Idaho Panhandle to Bonners Ferry. We feature many scenic locations on the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe routes along the way, featuring as varied motive power as possible in a land dominated by the ubiquitous General-Electric Dash-9.
Seattle: we look at a number of locations on the route through the City that plunges underneath the skyscrapers to the north of King Street station. We see Amtrak Cascades passenger services operated by F59PHI units dwarfed by the giant Seahawks football stadium. Highlight is a GP39M hauling Boeing 737 fuselages from Wichita to Renton. Wenatchee: travelling east we visit the self-proclaimed ‘apple capital of the world’ where the BNSF tracks join with others at the confluence of the Wenatchee and Columbia Rivers. Amidst superb scenery we witness stacks and manifests headed by strings of Dash-9 locomotives at Dryden and West Malaga. We also catch the local manifest headed by a GP38 and a GP39-2. Rock Island Dam: we continue our journey east to the wide and sweeping valleys of the Columbia River. Stack trains and local manifests are dwarfed by the surrounding landscape, stretching far into the distance. Amongst the Dash-9 variants seen, one is a Canadian National locomotive belonging to type AC44CW. East of Trinidad: climbing out of the Columbia River we join up with the BNSF route between Pasco and on to Spokane. We follow the line through Cunningham and onwards to Ritzville and Sprague. Unit grain trains dominate on this route with DPUs provided for additional assistance. Sandpoint in Idaho is home to a long single-track rail bridge taking the BNSF line over Lake Pend Oreille; we study a number of stack and manifests as they make their way across this spectacular man-made structure. Highlight is the appearance of an SD60M on a track measurement train. Finally we head north to Bonners Ferry, where Canadian Pacific and BNSF trains break the silence and disappear into the magnificent mountain scenery - a truly wonderful location from which to end this programme!
