Signalling Centres in the North-East: No 2A Leeds

As the latest in the “Signalling Centres” series, this is the first of two parts covering the complex history of railways and signalling around Leeds. The city was served not only by the North Eastern Railway but also by the Midland, GNR/L&Y and LNWR companies. This volume focuses on the former NER line east to Garforth and the Leeds Northern route to Bramhope tunnel; however, it also includes a detailed history of Leeds City station from earliest times, through successive expansion schemes to the present day. The second part will cover the history of each of the other companies’ lines which ultimately became part of BR’s North Eastern Region.

The author has drawn on extensive research over many years using primary sources wherever possible and has been fortunate to be supported by many well-known photographers and railwaymen who have been willing to share their memories of the Leeds area. Extensive use has been made of maps and diagrams, many of which have been especially drawn, to help illustrate the history and development of these lines.

The book covers far more than the signalling heritage so will appeal to those with an interest in the railways in and around Leeds.

Softback, 152 pages, over 220 colour & monochrome photographs, together with numerous specially drawn signal box diagrams
