When the railways were Nationalised on 1 January 1948 they were faced with huge problems including Duplicated main lines, unprofitable branch lines, inefficient steam locomotives, diminutive goods wagons, competition from road transport etc.These problems were compounded by the fact that the railways suffered the ravages of two World Wars and the Depression of the 1930s.
