The LMS Class 5 mixed traffic 4-6-0s introduced by W A Stanier in 1934 were some of the best known and highly regarded British steam locomotives.
They worked almost every type of train virtually all over the LMS system and remained in use until the final day of steam traction. In all 842 engines were built over a seventeen year period by three railway works and two private builders, with different boilers, frames, wheelbases, valve gear and tenders.
During research for the class the authors discovered over one hundred variations in the class, some minor but nevertheless present.
Some very minor creasing to the front cover.
With such a large class it has been decided to cover the subject in 3 volumes and the first one deals with the 225 locomotives built in 1934 and 1935, Nos 5000-5224, as well as modifications to them and some discussion of their initial service.
